So there was finally a new episode of BONES on Wednesday night. Grisly murders, snappy dialogue and lightning fast forensics...gotta love it.
But... and there’s always a but...not long into the episode comes this little exchange. Jack and Cam are discussing Dr. Brennan’s new book, Red Tape, and how the murders are copy cat killings of those described in the novel. Cam says she hasn’t bought Tempe’s novel because she deals with death all day and doesn’t want to read about it for kicks. The conversation goes like this:
Jack: So for kicks you read?
Cam: ...feminist trash. Woman finds her power, leaves her oppressive husband and discovers freedom and fulfillment with an artist who knows how to cry and makes love like an animal.
Jack: So...sex books?
Cam: Pretty much.
What’s wrong with this picture? What Cam has described is basically an erotic romance. Of course someone as high brow as her has to cover up her embarrassment by calling it ‘trash’ and ‘feminist trash’ to boot! She sputters a little before responding to Jack’s initial question, because she doesn’t quite know how to describe her guilty little pleasure.
I think that’s sad and it just feeds into the stereotype that an intelligent, professional woman can only read this kind of stuff if she has a good excuse. Her job is too stressful to read mystery novels, so she reads for escapism. What’s wrong with that?
Why couldn’t her character have just had the guts to say, “Oh, me? Well, I like a good solid romp. I’m not interested in boring testimonials or pop-culture self help. I can’t stomach the latest sob fest or coming of age novel. I want a good, sexy adventure story that I can sink my teeth into and have fun reading. And...I didn’t read Dr. Brennan’s book, because I’m jealous as hell of her.”
That’s how I would have written the scene.
BTW – I do LOVE that the main character in Temperance Brennan’s novels is named Kathy Reichs. LOL.

I read the sides to this episode which clears up why they took time out to establish what types of books Cam reads.
There was one scene where the squints are talking about Brennan's book, and Brennan's sexual imagination in the book. Hodgins recommends the book to Cam, which she is intrigued about its content.
Its a rather amusing scene, but I guess they didn't want to spend more time talking about Sex or something.
Thanks for posting, toomany! It sounds like that would be an interesting scene. Maybe it will show up when Season 2 comes out on DVD. ;)
I have a difficult time admitting what I write. I make a joke out of it. My husband and I laugh and say I write "Porn". See? I'm perpetuating the very thing I'm against.
I'm learning to say I write erotic romance. I think it's going to take time.
I saw this scene, but I didn't take offense to it. Probably because I don't write erotic romance and bells didn't go off in my head, but maybe also because I was thinking, "She wrote a mystery/suspense and it sold THAT many copies, and she's doing all this promo work." with my "green" eyes. Yes, I realize I just admitted envy for a fictional character. ;)
I do prefer your version of how the scene should have been written, Jennifer. :)
I found that scene obtrusive and awkward. I didn;t quite get the combo of "feminist" with "trash (i.e. romance)" That isn't really even a sub-genre that exists as far as I know.
Jen M., don't worry - my husband calls me a 'smut peddler.' I don't mind. He says it with a smile. The more of us there are, the more the stereotypes will fade away, I hope.
Jenn, I envy Dr. Brennan too! I also have to ask when she finds the time to write and promo when she's solving mysteries every week and hanging around with hunky FBI agents. Who could write? I'd be swooning every time Seely looked in my direction. LOL.
Em, the scene really was a throwaway. I doubt it would have made the editorial cut if it had been in a novel. ;)
I've always been a proud romance reader. Now that's I'm a romance author, well, far be it from me not to crow loud and proud about what I write. lol
I love Bones, but I was also surprised by the comments on Cam's reading. What was the whole purpose with that scene? It escaped me. Sigh.
Your Fellow Romance Diva,
Sara :)
I am SO with you on this. I wish women who are strong can be strong enough to not have to downplay books like that...
