Thursday Thirteen #13

Thirteen Jennifers

When I was a kid, I was the only Jennifer in my kindergarten class. I didn’t like my name and I thought nobody else did either. Later in my life it became one of the most popular names for girls and I sort of grew into it. Here’s a list of people I share my name with.

Jennifer Elbaum – rockin’ suspense novelist
Jennifer Leeland – naughty erotic romance novelist
Jennifer St. Giles – romance author
Jennifer Bianco – fellow Diva romantic suspense author
Jennifer MacKenzie – another romantic suspense author – Hmm, I see a trend here
Jennifer Crusie – best selling romance author
Jennifer Garner – actor, former star of ‘Alias’, Mrs. Ben Affleck
Jennifer Lopez – singer/actor [is it okay to call her an actress or not?]
Jennifer Aniston – actor, former ‘Friend’
Jennifer Katz [formerly Jennifer Colgan, my husband’s cousin]
Jennifer Thompson – sister of my junior high school boyfriend
Jennifer Love Hewitt – actor, currently The Ghost Whisperer
Jennifer Convertibles – furniture store

Picking favorites

Jennifer Elbaum posed this question in my blog comments earlier today and I decided to make a post out of the answer, since odds are not that many people see the comments section.

Jen asked me:

Since you're so prolific, do you have a "favorite" story? And if yes, why?

Good question. Picking a favorite story can be like picking a favorite child. I love them all but some more than others at different times for different reasons.

Usually my favorite story is the one I'm working on at the moment. If I'm really in the zone, I'm in love with the hero, best friends with my heroine and totally committed to giving them the bumpiest ride I can think of toward their happy ending.

If I had to choose a favorite of my published works, I'l probably pick The Soul Jar. Why? Because it's got all the elements I love in a book. It's an adventure story first and foremost, somewhat in the spirit of Indiana Jones--at least that's what I was shooting for. The hero, Chance MacKenzie, is Australian and there's just something about Aussie men! Yum. Bree Sennett, the heroine, is tough and clever, but she's vulnerable too. Chance hurt her badly in the past, [not by his own choice] and he has to work very hard to win her love and her trust back.
The story spans the globe from Chinatown to Cairo and I really enjoyed researching the information I needed to get the characters from one place to another in a realistic manner.

Another reason I love The Soul Jar is because it's sort of an underdog. It never got the press it deserved and has been largely ignored by review sites. I don't know why. The cover is hot, the story is steamy, but not a lot of reviewers have bitten. In fact I've been promised reviews by a couple of sites that never delivered. [Shrugs] I don't have time to hunt people down and demand to know why they didn't read my book.

For snippets of some of the reviews it did get, check out my website page. The now defunct Literary Sass girls loved it and voted it not only a One Shot Wonder but a Favorite Read of the Year. So not a lot people have read The Soul Jar, but those that did really liked it. I really liked it. It's a fun story.

That being said, if I had to choose my all time favorite story I've written so far in my career from ALL my work, pubbed and not yet-pubbed, I would pick The Matchmakers, my single-title Fae novel which [fingers crossed here peeps] will be winging it's way to several NY editors before the month is out.

The Matchmakers pits banished Fae, Calliope, against the likes of Nick Garrett, a "barely shaven, part-time carpenter, all-around handyman, loner, drifter, screwer-of-women and enemy of true love." Calliope is lovely. She's funny and sassy and she's in big trouble in the Fae world after granting a wish gone bad. Nick is a cynical smart-ass. He's hot as Hades too, which makes him irresistible to all the wrong kinds of women. I love their story because, believe it or not, I sob uncontrollably through the next to last chapter EVERY single time I read it. And I WROTE the damn thing. Sometimes I get misty-eyed just thinking about it. Hopefully an editor will, too.

So there you have it. My favorite stories and the reasons why. That doesn't mean that next week or next month my opinion may change, but this is how it stands for now.

Thursday Thirteen #12

Thirteen Nicknames for Saber

I saw this one someone else’s TT list and I thought it was cute. It’s funny how we all have a bunch of different names for our cats or dogs and how they always know who we mean when we call them by a different name.

1. Sabe
2. Sabey
3. Sabey Baby
4. Saber Doots
5. Saber Nation
6. Pumpkin Muffin
7. Mommy’s Boy
8. Cyber
9. Cyber Pup
10. Pupster
11. Sabling
12. Sabing
13. Super Pup

The list goes on. It's a wonder he knows his name at all, I hardly ever use the real one.

Thumb's Up

I'm thoroughly convinced I've lost my mind, again. The other night I had a dream that I visited a world entirely populated by thumbs.

Yes. Thumbs. Just thumbs, unlike the apt photo above, these thumbs did not have hands attached to them, or faces but they all had thumb prints.

I was there, apparently, to observe their form of government, which consisted of hundreds of thumbs banding together into one giant thumb which then proceeded to make decrees about life on Thumbworld. The spectator thumbs cheered every decree [without mouths, I'm not sure how they did it, but they did] and they generally seemed pleased with each new decision the ruling thumb came up with.

They were blissfully happy.

That's what I remember most about the dream. The thumbs were the happiest thumbs in the universe. They enjoyed being thumbs.

I don't know if I should seek medical attention or simply take a lesson from the thumbs and learn to be happy as I am. Either way, no more snacks before bedtime for me.

Who likes sale-ing?

Garage sale-ing, I mean.

It's one of the few things I really like about the warmer months. My best friend and I have decided to make it a summer of sale-ing and we started today [despite the fact that it was freezing and a little rainy]. Today was the townwide garage sale and it would have been an all day event except for the weather, but we put in three hours.

I brought my daughter along and she came home with two Asian style necklaces and a huge stuffed frog wearing a crown.

I bought two bracelets, two bottles of acrylic paint, a miniature vase for my collection, a handful of book socks and a box of pencils for September, two candles, and a pasta cooker.

My girlfriend found an armful of cookbooks, some candles, a vase and a brand new pair of pants with the tags still on.

You can't beat that with a stick.

Our total expenditure for the three of us was uner $20.

Do you go sale-ing? If you do, have you ever found a magnificent bargain? Do you own garage sale items that you cherish?

Sending the dentist on vacation

Well, my dentist appointment was a rousing success for my dentist. He got to give me a temporary crown for my broken tooth and he can now afford to buy a small island in the South Pacific. I hope he likes it there.

Meanwhile I'm cranky and I can't open my mouth very far so there goes one of my favorite activities...eating. [What were you thinking?]

I guess if I can't eat, I should drink. That should make the mountain of laundry I have to do seem less important.

Off to find some tiny umbrellas and pretend I'm on that island, sans dentist.

The dangers of yawning

The Ancient Greeks believed that yawning was not a sign of boredom, but that a person's soul was trying to escape from its body, so that it may rest with the gods in the skies. - Wikipedia

Yawning may not be harmful to the soul, but in my case it's bad for the jaw. I've had TMJ for as long as I can remember and usually it doesn't bother me. I'm careful when I yawn and I gave up jawbreakers and gobstoppers years ago, but sometime during the night on Sunday, I yawned and heard that unpleasant crack of my jaw joints and now I'm in pain.

On top of that, I think one of my fillings is broken. I only have a few fillings, but one of them was feeling a bit strange during lunch, so today I have to go to the dentist. I don't know how I'm going to get my mouth open wide enough for him to look at my tooth - I could barely take a bite of my sandwich.

If it isn't one thing, it's another, and sometimes it's two things at once. And most of time everything happens just whem I'm sitting down to write.

What I'm Reading

I'm in the middle of two Diva books right now and enjoying both of them. I'm so happy I finally got to pick up a few titles from the authors I know!

A few weeks back I picked up Immorati by MK Mancos. MK is one of my CPs and she writes red hot science fiction and thought provoking paranormals. This one has an X-Files flavor to it that makes it a compelling read AND it's set in New Jersey!

Not too many books are set in the Garden State because the people who live here generally don't like to admit they live here and the people who don't, don't really know anything about us.

MK builds on the Jersey Devil legend in this story and gives you a reason to wonder what really goes on in the Pine Barrens. Anyone who's ever driven all the way south on the Garden State Parkway will know what I'm talking about. And those of you who haven't, now you have a reason to make sure your car windows are rolled up nice and tight!

Because I'm a little bit hyper when it comes to reading, I'm also in the middle of Portia da Costa's Entertaining Mr. Stone. This one was in my TBR pile already believe it or not - and I didn't know I knew Portia through Romance Divas, so when I cleaned out the TBR and found it, I had to start reading it.

This one is erotica of a very different flavor for me. It's written in first person, present tense! I've never read a book written that way before. It was a bit startling at first, but it works. It has a Bridget Jones feel to it that's fun and entertaining. There's just something about erotica with a British accent. LOL.

So if you're looking for new flavors in your reading, I recommend Immorati and Entertaining Mr. Stone to spice up your TBR pile!

PS: I'm also over at Star-Crossed today with this week's Backlist Bonanza Book of the Week excerpt!

Thursday Thirteen #10

Since I’m kicking off my Backlist Bonanza Book of the Week Contest, I thought I’d list thirteen opening lines from my stories.

1. Pain lanced through Sienna McKade’s body, white hot and relentless.
Flight of the Valkyrie

2. Bree Sennett clamped her lips shut on a startled gasp as a long shadow fell across her hiding place. The Soul Jar

3. Moonlight bathed the meadow in quicksilver and stretched long, inky shadows from the surrounding trees. Renna’s Sacrifice

4. Nola Rule studied the man at the bar, noting every detail of his appearance. A Calculated Risk.

5. Zira woke shivering. Gasping, she drew in a breath of cool air that ignited her tortured lungs. Ken’Ja

6. “I get tired of them throwing their panties at me.” The Adventures of Molten Man, No. 1

7. Cade Morrison eyed his surly reflection in the small mirror that hung next to the door of his office. The Demon of Pelican Bluff

8. As she shrugged out of her bikini top and thigh-high denim cutoffs, Mara Zander felt the intoxicating weight of a masculine gaze on her body. More Than A Fantasy

9. The midnight breeze had a cool edge to it that heralded the arrival of autumn. Hunter’s Moon

10. Ra’Nara shivered and pulled her worn cloak closer around her shoulders. Ravenstar’s Bride

11. The coachman shivered as he urged his horses faster through the darkest part of the forest. Conjured in Flames

12. The sultry beat coming from the interior of After Dark competed with the staccato of Erica Talbot’s heart as she approached the side door of the night club. Fresh Blood

13. Jake Beaumont saw red. Bonfire of the Vampires

Blog Tag ala Kat

Kat Mancos tagged me with this one:

Eight Things About Me...

1. I cannot sing a note. I don’t even like to sing Happy Birthday to people because my voice tends to frighten children and small animals.

2. I hate waiting for people to arrive. I don’t mean like someone being late for a dinner date or something, but I hate sitting around the house waiting for UPS, or the plumber etc. It disrupts the whole day and I usually get nothing done that day.

3. If I could live anywhere in the world, it would be near a beach.

4. My eyes are blue-green.

5. I’ve never smoked and I’ve never been drunk.

6. I feel guilty after I kill a spider. But I do it anyway.

7. I’m a Jersey Girl, but I’m so NOT a Springsteen fan.

8. I hate picking people to tag, so if you're reading this consider yourself tagged.

Personal Backlist Bonanza begins soon!

Promo is the bane of my existance.

I'll be the first to admit I'm not good at it. It's hard. I don't like to toot my own horn and often times when I do I feel like no one's listening anyway, but statistics show [or so people say] that promotion does help sell books.

What's the best form of promo? Beats me. I've done contests, and I plan to do more. I've done chats and every time I do one I swear I'll never do another. I've done author days which can be fun and paid for ads and went around bragging about my good reviews. I couldn't say if any one of those things [well, okay the paid ads, yes] has brought about an increase in sales.

Nevertheless, I must do it.

So starting Monday and running through September, I plan to have my own Backlist Bonanza and promote one book of mine each week. I plan to post excerpts here, at MySpace and on a few of my groups and generally talk about my books and take questions and very possibly give away prizes...I'm working on that one.

Stay tuned for Monday when I announce my first BOOK OF THE WEEK!

Kickin' Back

Yesterday I actually took the day off [from writing.] It was damn near impossible to do.

I finished Uncross My Heart and gave it to my non-writer best friend to read. I don't do this because I want unconditional praise or a big old pat on the back. I do it because she's an avid reader who can pinpoint the problems in my plot with laser effeciency. She probably should have been an editor or an agent to be honest. And she reads fast.

By 8:30 a.m. I was wondering how I was going to fill my day if I didn't do any "work." Don't get me wrong, it's not like my house is immaculate, or all my chores are done. I had plenty to do - but it was supposed to be a day off. When my husband takes a day off, he sits on the couch and watches movies. He relaxes.

I. Can't. Do. That.

I've tried. I've played a few hours worth of Marble Madness this week on the Wii and it was fun, but to spend a whole day not writing, promo'ing, editing or procrastinating when I should be writing [yes, I consider that part of the job too] just doesn't seem normal. I feel guilty if I'm not busting my butt to get a story done.

Ultimately I got through the day. I went shopping [cures just about anything] and I surfed the web [that may count as work because I visited all my usual sites and did Thursday Thirteen, and I cleaned off the patio furniture and made dinner and watched TV - and while I was doing that, I was sketching out a quick synopsis of my next novella.

Okay, so I guess I failed to take the day off completely.

SIGH. I'll just have to do better next time.

Thursday Thirteen #9

Thirteen Things I've Learned

1. It’s not the chicken soup that makes you feel better, as much as having someone who cares enough to get you chicken soup.

2. Being beautiful won’t make you happy, but being happy just might make you beautiful.

3. Everything happens for a reason, sometimes the reason is just to make you question why things happen.

4. Doing the right thing doesn’t always feel like doing the right thing.

5. If you have a choice between cleaning your house and playing with your kids, play. The house will still be dirty when you feel like cleaning it, but the kids won’t always be kids when you feel like playing.

6. Being comfortable is more important than looking good.

7. No one ever died wishing they’d spent more time at work.

8. You learn more from the mistakes you make than the ones you don’t.

9. Your happiness is your own responsibility.

10. A good dog is worth muddy paw prints and piddle on the rug.

11. Driving slow will get you there eventually. Driving fast might not get you there at all.

12. High school is not ‘the best years of your life.’

13. When someone tells you not to try because they’re afraid you might fail, they’re really afraid you might succeed.

Done!

I did it.

I got through the first draft of my WIP, Uncross My Heart.

I actually typed The End last week, but I had cheated and skipped the pivotal fight scene, which for some reason proved to be nearly impossible to put on paper.

Today, working around a two-hour trip to the office to help sort through ancient town records in a building that's about to be torn down...[hold on there, let me make a note of that, it sounds like a nice beginning to a story...] okay, working around that, I managed to write the 16-page scene and bring the story home at 92,000 words.

I should be overjoyed, but I still feel like I'm at base camp and there's a storm at the summit. I have this mountain of paper in front of me, and I'm still not sure it represents a coherent story.

Tonight I'm going to do some cosmetic edits and then start imposing upon my CPs to give me some much needed and brutal feedback.

How come DONE never really feels like DONE??
